Introduction to Bird Watching GWhen: April 29, 8:30 - 10am Who is eligible to participate: Attendees must be able to remain quiet and still while bird watching as birds are sensitive to sounds and movement and be able to maintain focus and attention to their instructors. Did you know bird watching can rewire the brain? Scientists have learned that watching and identification improves mental health by heightening observation and memory skills. In this course, students (and parents!) will learn the basics of bird identification, including learning to recognize and identify birds based on their color, size, shape, and behavior. Attendees will be led through an excellent location for viewing a variety of species, and will have the opportunity to gain real-time bird identification practice under the guidance of experienced instructors. |

Survival: Reading Nature/Natural Navigation G - LethbridgeWhen: April 30 from 1 - 3pm Learn to track animals with this class that explores different types of animal tracks, animal behaviours, as well as natural habitats. This class teaches students of the outdoors the unexpected skill of slowing down and paying attention to natural surroundings, as well as building appreciation of the ways nature works as a system. Participants will also learn how to orient themselves using natural cues. This program is geared towards home school students ages 6 – 17. While parents are not obligated to participate in these workshops, a parental representative must be present for students. Parents and younger siblings are also welcome to stay for the duration of the workshop free of charge. We ask that paid participants be given the space to fully engage and participate in the program. We run our programs rain or shine and encourage parents/students to check the weather on the day of the workshop and dress accordingly. We suggest wearing layers, as well as long pants and closed toed shoes. |

Mediated Learning Foundations PWhen: Three Wednesdays: May 1, 8, 15, from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Learn the steps to empower your innate teaching skills. This series of three 2-hour sessions will include instruction, parent participation, and opportunity for Q & A. As participants meet in a virtual classroom, a microphone headset, a strong internet connection and speakers are required. Foundations is a prerequisite to all other Mediated Learning Courses with the exception of Screen Impact. Once you have completed Foundations, please explore the other courses in any order. |

Beginner Bird Watching IWhen: May 4, 8:30 - 10am Who is eligible to participate: Attendees must be able to remain quiet and still while bird watching as birds are sensitive to sounds and movement and be able to maintain focus and attention to their instructors. Did you know bird watching can rewire the brain? Scientists have learned that watching and identification improves mental health by heightening observation and memory skills. In this course, students (and parents!) will learn the basics of bird identification, including learning to recognize and identify birds based on their color, size, shape, and behavior. Attendees will be led through Edmonton’s Whitemud Creek Ravine, an excellent location for viewing a variety of species, and will have the opportunity to gain real-time bird identification practice under the guidance of experienced instructors. |
