Mastering Argumentation
13 yrs and up, $195, 14 week course – No Prerequisite
As culture becomes increasingly uncomfortable with productive communication particularly among those who disagree, there has never been a better time to study the art of argumentation in light of seeking truth and encouraging compelling exchange. In this course, students will learn how to evaluate and craft arguments (both spoken and written) following classical models of rhetoric. These include the stasis theory which covers definitional, causal, evaluative, and problem/solution arguments, and also the classical oration approach which is a fine model for speeches and essays alike. The course will be divided evenly between discussion (of the terms of rhetoric/argumentation and examples of good arguments) and in-class debate (putting into practice the terms of the course and imitating the exemplary arguments).
In addition to reading preparation, this course will include some written elements for homework, but it is not a writing course per se.
