Westlock & Area Spring SocialWhen: Sunday, June 9, 2024, 4-8pm This event is open to all current WISDOM home schooling families as well as those families who are contemplating home schooling with WISDOM in the future. This is a great opportunity to visit with other home schoolers and members of the WISDOM team and find out more about how WISDOM can serve you best. WISDOM will provide hot dogs, buns, condiments, and beverages. We will enjoy a meal together as well as have an information time, door prizes, games, and socializing. This event will run rain or shine. Please bring: Potluck sides, salads, or desserts to share with the group. (Please note: if you have a highly restrictive diet, feel free to bring your own food if you wish.) There are many activities to enjoy at the facility, but you are welcome to bring other lawn games, board games, or lawn chairs if you would like. Survival: Spring Foraging/Spruce Tip Tea A - CalgaryWhen: June 10 from 1 - 3pm Whether in a survival situation or simply going for a hike, knowing where to find food and useful materials outdoors is an important skill. Participants will learn about the traditional uses of local plants, fungi and trees, as well as how to identify other useful materials that would support wilderness survival. The class will end with some spruce tip tea. Please bring your own reusable mug! This class makes a great precursor to the Wild Food and Outdoor Cooking class. This program is geared towards home school students ages 6 – 17. While parents are not obligated to participate in these workshops, a parental representative must be present for students. Parents and younger siblings are also welcome to stay for the duration of the workshop free of charge. We ask that paid participants be given the space to fully engage and participate in the program. We run our programs rain or shine and encourage parents/students to check the weather on the day of the workshop and dress accordingly. We suggest wearing layers, as well as long pants and closed toed shoes. |

Foraging Walk - Grande PrairieDate: June 10 Learn about 10-20 species of wild edible plants and fungus, with a focus on their use in the home kitchen. Kevin Kossowan has been on 100+ wild food adventures in the Canadian wild for his twice James Beard Foundation award nominated web series ‘From The Wild’. He’s taught field cookery at the Global Bushcraft Symposium, co-creates the series ‘Wild Harvest’ with Les Stroud and chef Paul Rogalski airing on PBS and National Geographic, has led numerous foraging workshops and forage-to-table workshops, and regularly works with chefs exploring the culinary potential of the Canadian wilderness. This event is only for WISDOM families. A parent or graduate may attend by themselves; students must be accompanied by an attending parent. |

Vermilion & Area Spring SocialWhen: Friday, June 14 from 1 – 4pm This event is open to all current WISDOM home schooling families as well as those families who are contemplating home schooling with WISDOM in the future. This is a great opportunity to visit with other home schoolers and members of the WISDOM team and find out more about how WISDOM can serve you best. WISDOM is hosting a farm tour at Chatsworth Farm near Vermilion. Come see all the amazing happenings of life on the farm! Join us for the day to meet the Wasylik family, see where your food comes from, learn more about farming, and enjoy a day out reconnecting with nature. You'll be able to see cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry, including some of the spring/early summer babies; guided garden tours will also be available. WISDOM will be providing snacks and beverages.For more information about Chatsworth Farm, or to see photos of previous farm tours, please visit their website and Instagram account. Please bring: Your family picnic lunch. There will be a few tables available at the farm, but you'll need to bring your own lawn chairs and picnic blankets. Dress for the farm, with closed-toed shoes, layers, a hat (good for sun AND rain!), and water bottles; you can refill your water bottles at the farm hydrant. Also bring sunscreen, insect repellent, and hand sanitizer. Portapotties are available onsite.Farm products are available for purchase, so you might want to bring some cash and a cooler for farm fresh eggs, beef, lamb, pork, and flour.
