Shelter Building & Torches - AthabascaWhen: November 5, 2024 Register for either of this day's events below, or register for both and save $5! What: Long Term Shelter Building This class will focus on longer term survival shelters that balance comfort and warmth. Participants will work on constructing a raised bed shelter that will provide more comfort and warmth than an emergency type shelter. What: Bushcraft Torches Torches have many uses in survival situations for light, moving fire, and other uses. This class will allow participants to create their own torch using only natural materials and learn about why torches may be an asset in the wilderness. This class will start with a knife safety presentation. Participants are welcome to bring their own non-folding knife if desired, otherwise all tools and materials will be provided. |

Essay Skills: Write Your Best English 30 Diploma Exam HWhen: Tuesdays and Thursdays, November 5 – December 10 and Tuesday January 7, from 9 – 10:30am This workshop is intended to assist students who are preparing for the written portion of the English 30 Diploma exam. Students will learn to decode essay prompts and utilize effective essay formatting. Applicants need to have advanced writing experience. This workshop covers the 2 essay types of the written portion of the exam: the Critical/Analytical Response to Literature and the Personal Response. Students will be taken through a 6 week program to cover each of the 7 scoring categories of the exam to help students achieve the highest score they can. Students will meet up to 90 minutes twice a week, and will have lots of hands-on writing practice and feedback. Marks for essays and mock-exam in this workshop may be used toward the ELA course challenge portfolio. Workshop acceptance based upon application. A maximum of eight students will be accepted. Fire Building & Winter First Aid - AthabascaWhen: November 6, 2024 Register for either of this day's events below, or register for both and save $5! What: Fire Building This class builds on the skills learned in Fire Starting however that class is not a prerequisite. Participants will learn about the science of fire and learn how to light, build and maintain an effective fire in many situations and environments. The class also covers how to source proper materials to burn and also how to troubleshoot issues building and maintaining fire. What: Winter First Aid Participants will learn about what Hypothermia is as well as the causes and symptoms. We will cover how to treat a Hypothermic emergency in the field as first responders. Time permitting participants will also learn about natural medicines that can be found in their area in the colder months. |

In this class participants will learn how to carve their own bushcraft mallet from raw wood to finished product that they can take home and use in their next adventure. There will be an additional knife safety talk before carving begins. Participants are welcome to bring their own non-folding knife if desired, otherwise all tools and materials will be provided. |

Mediated Learning Foundations VWhen: Thursdays, November 7 - 21, from 7 - 9pm Learn the steps to empower your innate teaching skills. This series of three 2-hour sessions will include instruction, parent participation, and opportunity for Q & A. As participants meet in a virtual classroom, a microphone headset, a strong internet connection and speakers are required. Foundations is a prerequisite to all other Mediated Learning Courses with the exception of Screen Impact. Once you have completed Foundations, please explore the other courses in any order. |
