Animal Tracking and Natural Navigation - Stony Plain E1177

When: 1-3pm November 5
Where: Chickakoo Recreation Area (meet in upper parking lot by washrooms)

The natural world is constantly communicating with us. By learning to observe carefully, we can discover the stories written around us.

In this class, participants will learn how to identify signs left behind by animals and understand how these clues can help us better understand our surroundings.

Students will explore:

• Animal tracks and footprints
• Scat and other animal signs
• Movement patterns and habitat clues
• How tracking helps us understand what animals live nearby

Participants will also learn natural navigation skills by exploring how people have traditionally found their way without modern technology.

Topics will include:

• Using natural signs to determine direction
• How trees, water, sunlight, and landscape features provide clues
• Creating a simple sun compass
• Traditional methods of navigation, including celestial navigation

Students will develop observation skills and learn to see the landscape in a completely new way.
