Funding is available for each student in the amount of $835.40. This is available via refund or direct purchase, in 4 allotments, with half available between October and May, and half between May and July. Submission deadlines are the last business days of September (for November payment of up to 50%), January (for March payment of up to the first 50%), March (for May payment of up to the complete funded amount) and May (for July payment of up to the complete funded amount).

1. Why do we need receipts? Why can't WISDOM just give us the money?
AB Education does not consider the funding as belonging to the family, but to the school. The school is required to use this portion of funding to supply learning resources (including lessons) for the use of the student, and non-consumables are regarded by AB Education as remaining the property of the school, returnable when the student is done using them. (WISDOM chooses to exercise the option of leaving non-consumable resources with the parents.) Consistent with the Alberta Home Education Regulation, AB Education would not allow a school to give money to home schooling parents without approved receipts or invoices.
2. Do resources belong to us or do we have to return them to WISDOM?
According to Alberta Education, all resources are the property of the school administration to dispose of as the board sees fit. WISDOM has the option of retaining these resources or turning them over to the parents. The WISDOM policy is to turn all resources over to the parents of the student for whom they are purchased.WISDOM chooses to retain no right to these resources.
3. Why does WISDOM wait until October to pay for our resources?
Each Fall, Alberta Education provides WISDOM with the first funding installment in early October. Until this funding arrives, we are not in a financial position to pay for resources for our families.
4. Why doesn't WISDOM pay the full amount in the beginning of the year?
Although WISDOM provides our families with 50% of their funding in October, we only receive only around 8% per month from Alberta Education. We are only able to offer more because some families do not take funding and some families do not mail us their receipts until later in the year.
5. Do I have to wait until certain times to send in receipts?
You may send receipts to us at any time during the year, however anything sent after the last business day of May will apply to the following school year. We really appreciate it when you send receipts in right at the beginning of the school year! Receipts must be sent with a completed expense form, or your refund will be delayed. 6. How do I use available funding?
There are two ways to use your available funding.
The first is to send receipts to us at any point in the year up to May 31. When we receive and process your receipts, you will receive an EFT for the receipt amount (up to the amount of funding you have available at that time, provided you have no outstanding purchase order numbers). We have 4 submission deadlines for payment throughout the year, with the last deadline of the last workday of May. To send your receipts to us, please fill in our Expense Form, sign it and mail it to us with your original receipts. Receipts sent after the last business day of May will be applied to the following school year, if not year-specific receipts (ie lessons, classes, and field trips).
Note: If you send us more receipts in a year than you have funds for, we will automatically hold the extra receipts until the following school year, when you have more funds available. We then issue payment for the acceptable receipts in the amount of funds available at that time.
The second way to use funding is to claim it using Purchase Order Numbers. In this scenario, WISDOM directly pays the vendor for your purchase.
Funding that is not used up by the end of May can be carried over to the following school year by sending us a completed Carry Over Form before June 30. If we do not receive it by June 30th, any funding remaining in your account will go toward supporting WISDOM services and programs.
