Beginner Bird Watching M

When: May 13, 8:30 - 10am
Where: John E. Poole Wetlands, St Albert
Price: $17 per participant
Parental presence is required but one parent may attend free of charge.

Who is eligible to participate: Attendees must be able to remain quiet and still while bird watching as birds are sensitive to sounds and movement and be able to maintain focus and attention to their instructors.

Did you know bird watching can rewire the brain? Scientists have learned that watching and identification improves mental health by heightening observation and memory skills. In this course, students (and parents!) will learn the basics of bird identification, including learning to recognize and identify birds based on their color, size, shape, and behavior. Attendees will be led through an excellent location for viewing a variety of species, and will have the opportunity to gain real-time bird identification practice under the guidance of experienced instructors.

Pre-requisite: Introduction to Birdwatching

Who is eligible to participate: Attendees must be able to remain quiet and still while bird watching as birds are sensitive to sounds and movement and be able to maintain focus and attention to their instructors.

BBQ with potluck. We will provide meat, buns, condiments, and water.

Please bring: Potluck side dish and dessert, lawn chairs, balls, games, etc.

Survival: Fire Building: Expanding on Fire Starting B - Lethbridge

When: May 14 from 1 - 3pm 
Where: Indian Battle Park
(meet at Alberta Picnic Shelter)

This class builds on the skills learned in Fire Starting, however that class is not a prerequisite. Participants will learn about the science of fire and learn how to light, build and maintain an effective fire in many situations and environments. The class also covers how to source proper materials to burn and also how to troubleshoot issues building and maintaining fire. 

This program is geared towards home school students ages 6 – 17. While parents are not obligated to participate in these workshops, a parental representative must be present for students. Parents and younger siblings are also welcome to stay for the duration of the workshop free of charge. We ask that paid participants be given the space to fully engage and participate in the program.

We run our programs rain or shine and encourage parents/students to check the weather on the day of the workshop and dress accordingly. We suggest wearing layers, as well as long pants and closed toed shoes.

CLT 3-8 (Grade 3-8 Assessment)

Testing dates for CLT3-8 can be any day from Apr. 22, 2024 to May. 17, 2024. After registering, please give a minimum of 28 days notice before the date you'd like the testing to be done.

The Classical Learning Test 3-8 (CLT 3-8) is for students in grades 3 to 8. These tests focus on numeracy and literacy, and can be a useful diagnostic and summative assessment tool. Tests taken year to year can be useful for tracking student growth. CLT 3-8 can be conveniently accessed from home.
