Foraging Walk - Fort McMurray B

Date: June 16
Time: noon - 2pm

Learn about 10-20 species of wild edible plants and fungus, with a focus on their use in the home kitchen.

Kevin Kossowan has been on 100+ wild food adventures in the Canadian wild for his twice James Beard Foundation award nominated web series ‘From The Wild’. He’s taught field cookery at the Global Bushcraft Symposium, co-creates the series ‘Wild Harvest’ with Les Stroud and chef Paul Rogalski airing on PBS and National Geographic, has led numerous foraging workshops and forage-to-table workshops, and regularly works with chefs exploring the culinary potential of the Canadian wilderness.

This event is only for WISDOM families. A parent or graduate may attend by themselves; students must be accompanied by an attending parent.

Survival: Spring Foraging/Spruce Tip Tea C - Red Deer

When: June 17 from 1 - 3pm 
Where: Red Deer - Kin Kanyon (meet at playground)

Whether in a survival situation or simply going for a hike, knowing where to find food and useful materials outdoors is an important skill. Participants will learn about the traditional uses of local plants, fungi and trees, as well as how to identify other useful materials that would support wilderness survival.  The class will end with some spruce tip tea. Please bring your own reusable mug! This class makes a great precursor to the Wild Food and Outdoor Cooking class.

This program is geared towards home school students ages 6 – 17. While parents are not obligated to participate in these workshops, a parental representative must be present for students. Parents and younger siblings are also welcome to stay for the duration of the workshop free of charge. We ask that paid participants be given the space to fully engage and participate in the program.

We run our programs rain or shine and encourage parents/students to check the weather on the day of the workshop and dress accordingly. We suggest wearing layers, as well as long pants and closed toed shoes.

Family Floor Hockey J

Join us twice a month for fun family floor hockey. No experience or skills required. Ages 9+. Please bring a plastic blade floor hockey stick, indoor non marking running shoes and a water bottle. We will have a limited amount of extra sticks to borrow if you forget yours and the floor hockey balls. Parents must stay with children, participation of parents strongly encouraged but not necessary. Feel free to watch.

Survival: Fire Building: Expanding on Fire Starting D - Edmonton

When: May 28 from 1 - 3pm 
Postponed: June 20 from 1 - 3pm
Where: Sir Wilfred Laurier Park (Picnic Site 7) 

This class builds on the skills learned in Fire Starting, however that class is not a prerequisite. Participants will learn about the science of fire and learn how to light, build and maintain an effective fire in many situations and environments. The class also covers how to source proper materials to burn and also how to troubleshoot issues building and maintaining fire.

Field Trip to the Birds of Prey Foundation

When: June 20, 2024
Time: Tour will start promptly at 2:30pm, plan to arrive by 2:15pm
Where: Birds of Prey Foundation, 2124-16 Avenue, Coaldale, Alberta
Cost: $8/person; children 2 and under are free

Plan to attend this exciting field trip to the Alberta Birds of Prey Nature Centre. This interpretive-led tour, by one of the trained staff, will give you the opportunity to see many birds of prey up close as you enjoy walking through this beautiful property. There will be an opportunity to take photos of a specially-trained owl, as well as see a flying demonstration and more. Come enjoy an afternoon in nature as you learn about Alberta's wildlife with other homeschooling families.

Please plan to arrive by 2:15pm, so the tour can start on time.

Where: Central Community Hall, 224045 Twp Rd 472, Gwynne

Please join us for visiting, homeschooling discussion, a family baseball game, other games, and a potluck supper (begins at 5pm).

Please bring: A main dish and side dish or dessert. No nuts of any kind, please. (Food allergies/preferences, please bring your own food, to be safe.) Be sure to bring lawn chairs, baseball gloves (if you have any) and bats, and any outdoor game equipment you would like to bring. WISDOM will provide beverages, plates, cutlery, and cups.
