Grande Prairie Fall Family Gathering

When: Sunday, September 8, 2024, 2-5:30pm
Where: Bear Lake Park on Rge Rd 72
Directions: If coming from Grande Prairie, go north on Hwy #2 or Rge Rd 63, turn west (left) on Twp Rd 730, go about 8 miles, and turn south (left) on Rge Rd 72 at the Bear Lake Bible Camp sign.

Join other WISDOM families for a shared afternoon of visiting and BBQing. WISDOM will provide hamburgers, buns, condiments and beverages. There will also be an interactive tour of the Canuck one-room schoolhouse, a short walk away.

Activities:

  • Visiting, 2pm onwards
    • Playground
    • Kayaking on Bear Lake (kayaks provided)
    • Tour of one-room schoolhouse
  • Homeschooling informational talk, 3:30pm
  • BBQ hamburgers with shared sides and dessert, 4:00pm
  • Campfire and roasted marshmallows

Please bring: Lawn chairs and a potluck dish to share (ie: salad, crackers & cheese, chips & salsa, watermelon, squares, dessert, etc.)

Edmonton & Area Family Gathering

When: Sunday, September 8, 2024, 4-8pm
Where: Meadowlodge Bible Camp (MBC), near Cooking Lake
Directions: MBC is south east of Sherwood Park on the northside of Cooking Lake near the intersection of Rge Rd 215 and Twp Rd 515 (located next to Birch Bay Bible Camp).

WISDOM will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, condiments and beverages. We will enjoy a meal together as well as have an information time, door prizes, games and socializing. This event will run rain or shine.

Please bring: For the meal, please bring potluck sides, salads or desserts to share with the group. (Please note: if you have a highly restrictive diet, feel free to bring your own food if you wish.) There are many activities to enjoy at the facility, but you are welcome to bring other lawn games, board games, or lawn chairs if you would like.

NOTE: Similar to other years, families who wish to set up a table to sell baking, crafts or curriculum are welcome to do so. Please email Liz Gurnett with details.

Chess: Intermediate Continuation Class - All Ages D

Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Chess

Intermediate chess course is for students who want to learn complex concepts that revolve around seeing at least 2 moves ahead or more. This challenging 6 week course helps students reach their full potential as they master all fundamentals and start visualizing multiple variations. Classes can only be taken by students who took the beginner chess class offered by WISDOM or for students who contacted Mr Bloom directly to verify skill level.

Mediated Learning Foundations S

Learn the steps to empower your innate teaching skills.

This series of three 2-hour sessions will include instruction, parent participation, and opportunity for Q & A.  As participants meet in a virtual classroom, a microphone headset, a strong internet connection and speakers are required.

Foundations is a prerequisite to all other Mediated Learning Courses with the exception of Screen Impact.  Once you have completed Foundations, please explore the other courses in any order.

Minimum of 10 people needed for this event to run

This class will start off with a discussion about wilderness safety/what to do if you get lost, followed by a discussion about effective types of shelters for a variety of conditions. The participants will get hands on experience and will build their own emergency shelter with minimal tools.

Minimum of 10 people needed for this event to run

This class will cover the basics of knife use, safety and “the right knife for the right job”. Participants will practice the skills they have acquired in class as well as learn methods of fire wood processing with just a knife.

A Métis Welcome B

Where: Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site of Canada

Cost: $17/student
Participants may stay to enjoy the Park at no extra cost after the event. Parents attend free as chaperones.

Join Métis Elders and interpreters in the Métis camp at the National Historic Site in Rocky Mountain House to learn about the history of the Métis people, the fur trade, the buffalo hunt, and Métis culture. Try traditional finger weaving and learn to jig!

Please arrive at the Visitor Centre at the National Historic Site in Rocky Mountain House at 9:45am. Interpreters will greet you there. The program runs from 10:00am until Noon and will take place outdoors, so please dress accordingly.

Bring a bagged lunch (there are vending machines, but no real concession on site) to enjoy in the park afterwards.

Fire starting takes a look at the science behind fire, and the hallmarks of an effective fire. Participants will have the opportunity to practice fire starting using basic methods. This class is a precursor to Advanced Fire Starting. Advanced Fire Starting includes class discussion about fire maintenance, "the right fire for the right job," and the opportunity for participants to practice their fire-building skills with advanced methods, and using all-natural materials.

Participants will learn about what Trees, Plants, Berries, and Fungi are edible, medicinal and/or useful, plus learn about any toxic plants, berries or fungi they may encounter. If possible there may be an opportunity to taste and/or cook what has been foraged.

Wetaskiwin Area Fall Family Gathering

When: Saturday, September 14, 2024, starting at 10:45am
Where: Reynolds-Alberta Museum, Wetaskiwin (open 10am-5pm)

Details: Driving Thru the ‘70s is the featured display at the Reynolds, with several special sessions happening on September 14. Come right at 10:00am if you like and start touring. Gather with WISDOM near the main entrance at 10:45am and we’ll head to the 11:00am and 11:30am sessions. Join other WISDOM families for a 12:00pm picnic lunch and visiting outdoors, just west of the museum cafeteria (in the cafeteria if poor weather). After lunch, enjoy a self-guided tour with your family. The Aviation Museum will also be open. There will likely be free vintage car rides available on the grounds.

NOTE: Free admission with homeschooling "proof" (WISDOM student/educator ID cards or acceptance letter from WISDOM on your phone) for one parent and children. A second parent attending must pay the admission fee.

Please bring: A picnic lunch and beverages for your family and a blanket and/or lawn chairs.
