Journey into Middle Earth through the readings of J.R.R. Tolkien. Read and discuss The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy (The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King). This class will go beyond the magic and adventure to explore themes of friendship, loyalty, sacrifice, sin, and redemption.  Readings are long.  It is suggested that students are proficient readers.


Students must obtain their own hard copies of J.R.R. Tolkien's: The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

Week 1: The Hobbit, Ch. 1 - 5
Week 2: The Hobbit, Ch. 6 - 10
Week 3: The Hobbit, Ch.11 - End

Week 4: The Fellowship of the Ring, Bk. 1: Ch. 1 - 5
Week 5: The Fellowship of the Ring, Bk. 1: Ch. 6 - 11
Week 6: The Fellowship of the Ring, Bk. 1: Ch. 12, and Bk. 2: Ch. 1 - 3
Week 7: The Fellowship of the Ring, Bk. 2: Ch. 4 - 10

Week 8: The Two Towers, Bk. 3: Ch. 1 - 5
Week 9: The Two Towers, Bk. 3: Ch. 6 - 11
Week 10: The Two Towers, Bk. 4: Ch. 1 - 5
Week 11: The Two Towers, Bk. 4: Ch. 6 - 10

Week 12: The Return of the King, Bk. 5: Ch. 1 - 7
Week 13: The Return of the King, Bk. 5: Ch. 8 - 10, and Bk. 6: Ch. 1 - 3
Week 14: The Return of the King, Bk. 6: Ch. 4 - 9 (appendices optional)
