Come ready to read and discuss! This is a parent/child course. Experience using the Socratic method in this introductory level course while reading and studying a weekly fable or tale. The entire family is encouraged to participate in reading and asking questions about these classic short stories prior to class, so that once in class, the experience is rich. Students and parents alike will enjoy this exploration into the deep lessons and ideas in these seemingly simple readings.

Parent/child explore the Socratic Method and the world of stories, fables, and fairy tales, with somewhat more advanced readings than Fables and Tales 1. Not only will these discussions examine the lessons and ideas within the stories, but the children will also start to examine what makes a fairy tale or a fable, and what about a reading makes it exciting or instructive, or both.

The child and parent take this course together. Each of the seven books in C.S. Lewis’s classic series will be explored and analyzed.  The process of peeling back the many layers found in the Chronicles of Narnia will reveal to students how to begin with a concrete story and then analyze it for themes, ideas, and character development. The rich and accessible writings of Lewis are a delight for children and adults alike, and the entire family will enjoy how real, uplifting, and powerful these stories can be.

Before the time of Christ, children were still taught the beauty and power of the Good and the wickedness and ugliness of the Bad. Cultures turned to the gods, a fantastical set of beings with great powers who guarded the earth and her inhabitants with actions both beneficial and hazardous. This course steps back to the time of the Greek myths and tells the tale of the eternal battle of good versus evil through the eyes of these enduring stories of the gods and their antics. You and your child will enjoy learning of the wiliness of Hermes, the bravery of Apollo, the wisdom of Athena, and the trickery of Hades. Through the adventures of these gods both on Mount Olympus and on Earth, students and parents will travel deeper into their understanding of truth, loyalty, justice, mercy, love, and sacrifice. They will also discover the ways natural law has informed the morality of society and given mankind knowledge of the Good.

Senior Course (14 yrs and up),  $195 - Prerequisite: Must have read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Sojourn through the ages, reading Greek and Norse mythology and Christian tales. Each class will take time to discuss Tolkien’s works in light of the bigger, weekly discussions. The reading list includes titles that influenced J.R.R. Tolkien and his writings, and students can begin to glimpse the great wealth of inspiration that inspired the timeless characters of Tolkien's work. While some readings may be challenging, they serve as a great reminder of the early legends and stories that continue to shape our culture and persistently fascinate the imagination.

Senior Course (14 yrs and up), $195 - Prerequisite: One Intermediate Level Course

In the world’s youth, Greek bards came up the world’s first fully-developed epic fantasy, full of unforgettable characters. Soar over the bold Odysseus’s ship as he navigates hydras, enchantresses, and the perils of a treacherous sea – will he ever come home to reclaim his rightful kingdom? Brimming with cunning warriors, clever maidens, heartbreak and heroism, the Greek mythos is not to be missed!

This course is designed to build students up in familiarity and comfort with the original stories of legendary Greek heros, in the context of the writing that the Greeks themselves would have enjoyed. Students will discover the complex immortal world of the gods, demi-gods, and mortal heros through narratives and Greek plays. This course builds into other WISDOM courses, such as The Gods of Mount Olympus, Foundational Great Books, Continued Great Books, and Before Tolkien, to continue the study of the strong creative roots of myth which we still enjoy in our culture today.

(Note to parents: This course's materials reflect ancient Greek understandings of the world, and this includes their understanding of human sexuality. Readings are carefully selected to be useful to a Christian education, but ultimately it is up to parents to decide what is appropriate material for their child.)

Intermediate Course (12 yrs and up), $195, 14 week course – No Prerequisite

Glimmerings of imagination tangle with tales of true-life heroes in the pages of historical fiction. Never was history more easy to remember and enjoy than by living through stories set in various eras. Students will immerse themselves in the events of an array of centuries and delve deeper into the meaningful lives of the characters who, while fictional, can make the context of a real time period ring true for all readers.

Is Fanny just a weak wimp? Which one is "Pride" and which one is "Prejudice"? Should Emma be sent to prison for her constant meddling? Find out for yourself! The Jane Austen course will cover three of Austen's books - Mansfield Park, Pride and Prejudice, and Emma. The character development and differences between Fanny, Lizzie and Emma will be discussed, as well as those topics and questions which will arise from the participants own critical reading of the text.

and learn what can be achieved with just a bit of Persuasion. Add Socratic discussion to the mix, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a fine time of it!

Intermediate Course (12 yrs and up), $195 – No Prerequisite

Journey into Middle Earth through the readings of J.R.R. Tolkien. Read and discuss The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy (The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King). This class will go beyond the magic and adventure to explore themes of friendship, loyalty, sacrifice, sin, and redemption. Readings are long, so we do suggest that students are proficient readers.

ModernClassics

Intermediate Course (13 yrs and up), $195 – No Prerequisite 

Modern Classics serves as as a great introduction for the Socratic Method style of learning. Students read classic literature of the 19th and 20th centuries with the goal of understanding predominant themes and analyzing the moral qualities of major characters. Over the course of the semester, students will develop their abilities to logically argue a position, cite examples from the text, and listen and respond to their fellow classmates.

VictorianGothic

Senior Course (14 yrs and up), $195 – Prerequisite: One Intermediate Level Course

Explore some of the most dramatic, mysterious, and thrilling tales ever told. Witness anew the gripping battle between good and evil. How are we to succeed in confronting the forces of darkness? What happens when man tries to play God? These beautiful works of Victorian Gothic literature shed the light of truth upon the desperate struggles of their characters. Some of the scenes are undoubtedly grim, but the subject matter is not written for mere sensationalist reasons, but rather to reveal the true nature of evil and affirm the triumph of beauty, truth, and goodness. Gothic literature tears the mask off of evil and exposes its lies, like a light shone into a corner that casts out and destroys the darkness.

Senior Course (15 yrs and up), $195, 14 week course – Prerequisite: Foundational Great Books
(Extra Evaluation Version available - see below)

This is a senior level course for those wanting to learn more about Canadian Government. How does our democracy work? How are Provincial parties related to Federal parties? How are MPs selected? What is the Canadian Senate all about? What is the history of parliament and governance? What of the BNA Act, our Constitution, the Canadian Charter of Rights, and what is Canada’s relationship to Britain? 

In this course, we will learn about and discuss the main elements and historical background of how our country is run, as a Federal State, a Constitutional Monarchy, and a Parliamentary Democracy.  We will explore the different levels and branches of both the federal and provincial government, in the aim of gaining an awareness and appreciation for the political scene, and of how we ourselves participate in it. The course ends with an exciting Parliamentary simulation, as students demonstrate all they have learned in a hands on experience.
